News and Photos from the Juvenile Redemption Center Garden Project in Stanislaus, California

Tomas Moreno from Planting Justice writes:

On June 2 and 3, 2014, Planting Justice staff led a garden build at the Stanislaus Juvenile Commitment Center in Modesto, California. Twelve of the boys who participate in the Culinary Arts program inside the Commitment Center participated in the construction of 12 raised beds filled with peppers, eggplants, strawberries, melons, tomatoes, marigolds, and one herb spiral. During the garden build, Planting Justice staff taught lessons on permaculture principles, landscaping techniques, garden construction, food justice and community empowerment. The garden will be maintained, harvested, and cooked by the boys in their Culinary Arts program at the Stanislaus Juvenile Commitment Center. One of the participants summed up the experience in the best way: “I learned that no matter where you are in life, you can always be productive and produce something important.”

Please see the attached photos of the garden build as well as the finalized garden.

Thank you, and the Friends Foundation International so much for your contribution to this project. Without your support, we would have been unable to complete this project.”
